YEAR 5 "eDAY" AMBASSADORS VISIT SOUTHEND HIGH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS!
Over the years, we have developed a lovely relationship with Southend High School for Girls Maths department.
Over the years, we have developed a lovely relationship with Southend High School for Girls Maths department. Year 5 children have visited as part of Maths and Science week for many years and taken part in a Maths lesson with older children. This gives the children the opportunity to experience life in secondary school and see what Maths is like past Year 6. This year, we have taken that one step further. Year 5 will be taking part in “eday” with Southend High School later in the term and, in preparation for this, the children were invited to become ambassadors for the day. Those willing volunteers put themselves forward to attend extra Maths sessions with Mrs Imbush (Director of Maths) and myself at Southend High outside of the school day. Our first session was this week and it was wonderful for the children (girls and boys) to work with older pupils on very complicated aspects of Maths. They were looking at polar coordinates and plotting graphs to make spirals, patterns and flowers. They looked at formulae of these graphs and how they can be drawn by hand and with a computer program. However, to make their work really come to life, they even had the chance to go to the Food Technology department and bake savoury swirls which showed the spirals they had been learning about. Maths definitely is everywhere!
The children were fantastic and a pleasure to take. I am looking forward to our next session!
Well done children.
